The chanter does what was long considered impossible for Scottish pipes of any kind: without any keywork, it gives Scottish smallpipes a musical range comparable to the Irish uilleann pipes, Northumbrian pipes, traditional flute and low whistle (an octave below these instruments), while preserving the standard fingering system and the characteristic Scottish sound and techniques within the core traditional range.
