Chanter 2 – EP featuring the Lindsay System Scottish smallpipes
Chanter 2 is the first publicly released recording to feature the Lindsay System Scottish smallpipes, developed by musician and instrument designer Donald WG Lindsay. The EP pairs Lindsay System pipes and Low Qwistle with tenor saxophone in new music recorded at the College of Piping in Glasgow.
About the pipes on this recording
The Lindsay System pipes were developed at home in 2014–2015 using desktop 3D printing and were featured at the time of the single’s release (January 2018) in the National Piping Centre’s magazine Piping Today (issue 89). The chanter does what was long considered impossible for Scottish pipes of any kind: without any keywork, it gives Scottish smallpipes a musical range comparable to the Irish uilleann pipes, Northumbrian pipes, traditional flute and low whistle (an octave below these instruments), while preserving the standard fingering system and the characteristic Scottish sound and techniques within the core traditional range. The result is an instrument that allows familiar Scottish piping style to be applied to a much wider range of music.
